 ‘When you get married in church, it’s for life’ – Church condemns Oulanyah’s decision to seek divorce

“I take you to be my lawfully wedded (husband/wife), to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part,” so are the vows a couple takes while being joined as husband and wife in church.

But Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah who exchanged similar vows of Lady Winnie Amoo on January 19, 2013 has backtracked after filing a divorce notice in the family division of the High Court.

However, church leaders are not happy that Oulanyah whose wedding service was conducted by the Archibishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali cannot stick by his vows.

Reverend Michael Mukhwana, the Provost at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero that conducted Oulanyah’s wedding  condemned his decision to file for divorce.

“He is a Christian and a role model. He should have exhausted all avenues, communicated and even sought counselling because a Christian marriage has no room for divorce,” Mukhwana said.

Mukhwana also said that the reasons Oulanyah raised are not strong enough to warrant the dissolution of the marriage.
