It was mixed fortunes for our girls in the 800m race in the ongoing Olympic games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Winnie Nanyondo bowed out but Halima Nakaayi qualified for the semis.

Uganda had hopes in 23-year-old Nanyondo but the middle distance runner just managed to finish in 2:02.77 minutes in women 800 metres heats, bowing out of the games.

Nanyondo has to go back to the drawing board since she has performed poorly, compared to her personal best of 1:58.63 she attained in 2015, in Monaco Italy.

22-year-old Halima Nakaayi has something to smile about as she registered a new personal best time of 1.59.78 minutes in her 800 metres heat, in the process qualifying for the semifinals that will be held on Friday.
