Allied Democratic Front (ADF) rebel leader Jamil Mukulu has been moved to Luzira Prison in Kampala.

This follows an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have him transferred from Nalufenya, where he was detained under tight guard by the Counter Terrorism Commandos from the Tactical Response and Neutralization department, headed by Commandant SP Higwira Fredrick.

State Attorney Thomas Jatiko made the application before Jinja Court Chief Magistrate John Francis Kaggwa on Tuesday, explaining that inquiries into Mukulu’s case are complete and they are about to commit him for trial in the High Court.

The application to move Mukulu from Nalufenya Police detention center was immediately granted.

Frank Baine, the spokesman of Uganda Prisons confirmed Mukulu was this afternoon in his custody.

The 51-year-old suspect was nabbed last year to face a range of crimes including terrorism and murder. Uganda accuses his rebel group of links to Somalia’s Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda. The ADF rebels launched an insurgency against the government in the early 1990s and later established bases in Congo.

The rebel group is accused of murdering hundreds of people in a string of massacres in Uganda and the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mukulu was in August 2015 together with two others; Mohammed Matovu and Omar Abdullah Mutuka, charged with the murder of five people including two police officers in Busoga region.
