Today is World Refugee Day. In Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda, this means a celebration bringing together over 11 nationalities to celebrate their traditions, dreams, and the peace they are building together.

Africell Uganda as part of their corporate social responsibility, joined the hundreds of refugees in the Nakivale Refugee Camp in a run to commemorate the day.

The first of its kind in the settlement, the World Refugee Day 5k Run was an initiative by the American Refugee Council (ARC) to help better life at the Nakivale Refugee Camp. The run brought together refugees, Olympians, Africell staff, ARC staff, supporters, and lovers of humanity from all over the world; all united for one purpose – raising money for  youth activities in the Camp.

Speaking about the participation in the run, Africell’s Commercial Director Milad Khairallah says this isn’t the first time Africell is partnering with ARC to aid refugees.

Last year, Africell partnered with the American Refugee Committee (ARC) that saw the giant telecom aid “change makers”-  a cluster of refugee youths from Nakivale Refugee Camp who had excelled at generating fresh ideas – get recognised and honored.

Milad said,  “We are honored to be part of this year’s refugee day celebrations.  Africell believes in helping communities in distress or those who are underprivileged. Refugees are part of humanity and helping with such a cause  is part of our vision to give back to communities where we do business. Our participation today is just a small boost to the Nakivale refugee community.”

Africell has over the years  been involved in community activities that promote the welfare of disadvantaged communities. Besides the community development initiatives, Africell has also set up sponsorship schemes that aid community growth.

The ARC said the cause was for the youth. “We are all running for a cause, a chance for refugee youth. Young people in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda are getting active and doing some amazing things! And a small boost will help them take the next step towards excellence and including more youth in their efforts.”
