Choosing the right doors can be tricky business, but not if you invest the right amount of effort, while also keeping a few key factors in mind. According to home finishing expert Martin Kibirige of Maritini Interior Contractors, when you get to the point where you are selecting doors for your house, you must consider things like; energy efficiency, choice of materials for the interior and exterior finish, longevity of the structure, its components, budget and aesthetics. He also shares some ideas on the various options out there.

Wooden doors can be expensive, but the good part is that they are the most durable of all options. They are mostly used for the interior but should you want to use them for the exterior, you must pay extra attention to the type of wood. According to Martin, most of the wooden doors are locally made and can go for prices in the range of Shs750,000 including door frames and hinges. A door alone should go for about 350k-500k.

Flush doors

These are doors made out of plywood or boards. They are the cheapest type of door on the market because they are light and are not durable. They, however have a variety of designs and are ideal for small rentals, interior store rooms. These go for an average of Shs180,000 without frame and hinges.

Aluminum doors

Aluminum doors look beautiful although they are also not the most durable. They are normally used on small gates, latrines and can go for 140k without frame and hinges. They are usually painted using powder courting which is mixed with vanish.

Steel doors

These are mostly used as exterior security doors because of their durability. Most of the steel in these doors is made of wrought iron which is imported from Turkey.  They come in handy for the front and back doors of the house. Depending on the thickness, a steel door will go for between 250k and 450k.

Glass doors

These are the most expensive doors on the market today. They are mostly used for the front entrance, but can also be used for the interior as separation doors—in which case you might need sliding doors.
