Last week, socialite Vashah Joanna threw a lavish birthday at Nawab Restaurant in Kampala. The backdrop of her photo booth had Pemba Sports Africa logos and tongues immediately started waggling that she is one of tycoon Jack Pemba’s women.

However, it turns out Pemba wasn’t comfortable with Vasha using his logos at her party. His lawyers have since written to her, asking her to desist from using the said logos.

“My attention has been drawn to media reports where you celebrated your birthday party at a certain restaurant in Kampala City. Of keen interest to us were banners displayed at your birthday venue, with your photo prominently displayed in the middle of the banner, surrounded by two known logos of Pemba sports Africa on either side of your photo and banner,” Francis Kiwa of Alaka and Company Advocates wrote to Vasha.

“The wilful and unauthorised inclusion of the logo(s) of Pemba Sports Africa in your birthday banner are calculated attempts to mislead the Company’s partners and the general public to believe that a relationship between you and Pemba Sports Africa Limited; when you are aware that relationship does not and has never existed,” the lawyer’s letter read.

“The Management of Pemba Sports Africa Limited has never entered into any arrangement whatsoever with you and did not in any way financially facilitate your said event. The Management thus disassociates itself from your event and strongly condemns your unsanctioned and illegal use of the Company’s logos in any of your events.”

“You are advised to desist from any further unlawful use of the Company’s Logos or name in any of your events in future.”

The lawyers however did not deny that Vasha is known to Pemba in his personal capacity.

“Whereas Mr Jack Pemba is the Chief Executive Officer of Pemba Sports Africa Limited and an acquaintance to you, such acquaintance neither associates you with the Company nor gives you the mandate to use the Company’s Logos,” Mugabi wrote.

“I have been reliably informed in writing by Mr Jack Pemba that he did not in any way facilitate or sponsor your event. You are advised to desist from continued unlawful use of Pemba Sports Africa Limited name and Logo(s) without its express written authorization,” the letter reads.

“You are further advised to desist from undermining your acquaintance with Mr. Jack Pemba by unjustifiably making reference to his name or his activities in your dealings or events … You are therefore advised to show respect to Pemba Sports Africa Limited and/or its CEO Mr Jack Pemba.”
