It’s now becoming a norm to boo officials especially from the central government. Vice president Edward Ssekandi endured a harsh reception at the opening of St. Mary’s stadium, the home of SC Vipers as they took on Platinum stars yesterday.

Stadium announcer of the day Abbey Mukibi called officials to inspect queue of players before the kick off.Drama came when Abbey introduced the Vice President Hon. Edward Ssekandi. Fans booed him. The packed stadium reverberated with jeers and boos.

However, the sound of supporters changed when Katiikiro Charles Mayiga’ name was pronounced. Fans applauded him chanting words like; “Abeewo” “Buganda eri kuntiiko”

After such scenes, we decided to reach out to some fans and asked about their thoughts about the incident.

According to fans, central officials are booed because they have not done enough to improve the game but they only attend to projects which  benefit them personally.  We challenged some them by asking what has Mengo government done to improve the game.

“It’s the responsibility of the central government not Mengo because our Kabaka does not collect taxes. All taxes go to the central government, so they must give back to the people by setting up projects like stadiums”, one fan defended their reactions.

To the observant fans who have been watching Cranes games at Namboole, I guess you have witnessed such reception scenes on many occasions. Even at Cranes’ last match which saw us qualify for the AFCON finals after 39years, fans jeered various central government officials.
