Following the murder of police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi this morning, President Yoweri Museveni has directed the immediate installation of cameras in all major towns of Uganda and along the highways.

Kaweesi was gunned down this morning together with his bodyguard and driver by assailants on two boda bodas.

Maj Mohammad Kiggundu was killed in similar manner late last year and state prosecutor Joan Kagezi faced the same fate in March 2015. Several muslims clerics have been gunned down in similar fashion.

“I condemn in the strongest terms the killing of Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his driver Godfrey Mambewa and bodyguard Kenneth Erau by thugs riding on motorcycles,” president Museveni said in a statement released to the media by his press secretary Linda Nabusayi Wamboka.

“As a consequence of these repeated murders in the city and other towns, I have directed the immediate installation of cameras in all major towns of Uganda and along the highways,” he said.

Museveni said government had this project in plan but implementation was always postponed on account of other priorities like roads and electricity.

“Since, however, these thugs think they can use this remaining gap in our otherwise robust security frame work, I have decided and directed the Minister of Finance to work with Police to immediately close this gap,” he said.

“Security personnel and all citizens should be vigilant and on the lookout for these thugs who have made it a habit to use motorcycles to kill people.”

“Remember the incidents of Joan Kagezi, Major Kiggundu and a number of Sheikhs; they were killed in the same manner. If you notice such characters and especially if they are trailing a person with armed guards, you should take prompt action and challenge them,” Museveni said.

“I condole with the bereaved family and assure them that government will bring these killers to book.”

“I also reassure the country that security of person and property of all citizens will be guarded at all costs,” the president vowed.
