MPs call for immediate police reshuffle, starting with Kayihura

As Ugandans continue to ask questions about the security situation in the country following the killing of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard and driver, some members of parliament want heads to roll.

Yesterday,  Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, that of Kasese Municipality Robert Centenary and shadow Defence minister Hon. Gilbert Oulanya called for the immediate reshuffle of top police officers including the IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura.

“We have seen Kayihura has been the IGP for over 10 years, but killings are just escalating. Why doesn’t he resign from the position,” Hon. Oulanya asked.

“We are hearing uncoordinated statements, rumours but nobody has come out to inform the country about what is happening,” added Ssekikubo.  MPs went ahead to give government a three weeks’ ultimatum to release a report on the escalating killings in the country or else they would institute a committee to investigate.

This, however, is not the first time MPs are calling for the resignation of Gen. Kayihura. In 2010 after the bombings in Kampala, some MPs called for the IGP and then Security Minister Amama Mbabazi to resign.

Kayihura at the time responded that “Most of these MPs calling for my resignation are just there sleeping in Parliament. They have never tabled any motion on security even amid security threats but are just waking up to call for my resignation! That’s hopeless.”
