You would probably have a hard time believing it now, but Herbert Kabafunzaki, the minister arrested last Saturday for allegedly taking a bribe from Aya Group businessman Mohammad Hamid was once an advocate for a corruption-free Uganda.

In a post on his Facebook wall back in May 2015, Kabafunzaki made it clear he was on the side of whoever was ready to kick corruption out of Uganda with a post in which he stated: “Corruption is the enemy of development and good governance. It must be got rid of. Both the government and the people at large must come together to achieve this national objective….”

That was at a time when the embattled Kabafunzaki was still ‘only’ a local councillor for the Ssabagabo (Makindye) and not yet an MP and the Minister of State for Labour and Industrial Relations he is today, meaning he didn’t have the type of networks and “opportunities” his new job provides. Yet a year and 11 months after that post, Kabafunzaki was appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court and being charged with soliciting and receiving a Shs5million bribe. The minister however claimed it was a set-up. He was granted bail by the court.
