A few years ago, it was hard to imagine that high fashion would be embraced by Ugandans. The year is 2017 and Uganda is holding arguably one of Africa’s biggest red carpet fashion events, the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAS) sponsored by Ciroc; perhaps signifying the premium nature of fashion.

Unlike previous ASFAS, this year’s awards have a flavoured twist featuring more renowned fashion designers from the African continent; amongst who is Nigeria’s Mai Atafo.  From perfectly fitting wedding gowns to sophisticated and elegant bespoke suits, Mai is truly one of the most creative fashion designers to bless the face of Africa.

With a founded background in marketing and branding having worked with top brands like the British American Tobacco and Guinness Nigeria, Mai quit his job as Brand Manager at Guinness to venture into fashion. That marked the beginning of relentless creativity that has made him one of the most sought after fashion designers.

“It is indeed a great milestone in Uganda’s fashion industry to have one of the most recognised and award winning African fashion designers, Mai Atafo showcase his versatile, classic and perfectly put together designs,” ASFAs founder Brian Ahumuza says.

The event is slated for next Friday, December 8 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Tickets are selling for Shs100,000 and Shs3m for VIP tables.
