The country’s top rally drivers will be in Fort Portal this weekend for the fourth round of the National Rally Championship as the battle for points heats up, writes William Kasoba.

More than 40 crews will be out for championship points as they bid to consolidate or improve their NRC positions. The two-day event starts this Saturday, June 2 with a 4.2kilometre Super Special Stage at Boma grounds, before the final day’s action on Sunday which will feature four competitive stages with a total distance 144.18kilometres.

Hassan Alwi was the victor in Fort Portal last year but a number of drivers will be eyeing podium finishes to revive their seasons, among these Ronald Sebuguzi and Ducan Mubiru who narrowly missed out on last year’s title. Both need to overturn their stumpy starts this season.

The first three rounds have produced only two winners; Jas Mangat who has won twice and Ponsiano Lwakataka who won the Masaka Rally. With such impressive performances, it is no surprise that Mangat leads the NRC standings with 200 points. Unisan Bakunda is in second place on 161 points, 21 points above third-placed reigning champion Christakis Fitidis.
