Speaker Kadaga threatens to suspend Parliament if SFCs, Police and Military Police who tortured MPs are not arrested

The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has written to President Museveni calling for arrest and trial of security officers who tortured MPs and civilians in the Arua by-election fracas.

In the letter, she noted that no efforts have been made to bring the officers to book.

“Your Excellency, I am concerned that no effort has been made to arrest security officers from Special Forces Command, Military Police, Uganda Police Force who were involved in violent actions against civilians”, the letter read in part.

She stated that the violence breaches Prevention and Prohibition of the Torture Act 2012 section 1(a) and (b).

In a strong stance,  she stated that it “will be difficult to conduct government business” in the August House without arrest and trial of  the security officers.

She further noted that the House will not condone acts of lawlessness by any leader.

Legislators Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu,  Francis Zaake, journalists among other civilians were victims of the violence.
