The government has not cancelled MTN Nyege Nyege Festival contrary to statements made by the Minister of Ethics and Integrity,  Fr. Simon Lokodo.

According to Andrew Mwenda, the Minister does not have the authority to cancel the much-anticipated event.

I can confirm government of Uganda has not stopped MTN Nyege Nyege Festival as Hon. Lokodo has claimed. The Prime Minister told parliament today the minister of internal affairs is the one responsible. I have talked to Hon Jeje Odongo who says he has not stopped the festival

Mwenda stated that he spoke to internal affairs minister, Gen. Jeje Odongo who confirmed that the event cannot be cancelled on mere unsubstantiated allegations.

Just spoken to Internal Affairs Minister Gen. J. J. Odongo, he states #NyegeNyege organizers should go ahead with prepations for their function. Further review meeting involving all stakeholders is scheduled for 10.00am 2moro @UgandaMediaCent @ubctvuganda @nbstv @ntvuganda

Lokodo claims the event brings together homosexuals and drug abusers from different parts of the world.  He stated that calling off the event would be a move to ‘save the image of the country’.

Nyege Nyege Festival is scheduled to take place at Nile Discovery beach from Thursday, September 6th to 9th.
