The UPDF is currently carrying out recruitment for the 24,000 LDUs that will be deployed to provide security services at community level in districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso.

According to Gen. David Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces, the LDUs will dress in UPDF gazette uniform.

The recruitment of LDUs follows a directive by President Yoweri Museveni. The president stated it will be a temporary stopgap measure to fight insecurity in Kampala after the rise in urban crimes like murder and assassinations.
