Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza’s ‘assault file’ forwarded to DPP — the general could soon be in hot soup

Uganda Police has submitted a file of assault and obstruction of Police Officer on duty against Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza and his bodyguards to the resident state prosecutor for scrutiny.

The investigations followed a video clip that went viral on Social Media, showing Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza and two of his body guards harassing Sgt. Esther Namaganda who had stopped them from making a U-turn in the middle of the road in Seeta, Mukono District.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Onyango has confirmed the submission of the file to the DPP, saying: “It is true the file has been submitted to the resident state prosecutor. The office will advise us on the way forward,” the city police spokesman said.

According to the report, the detectives concluded that Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza was involved in the assault and if the prosecutor sanctions the file the Major General could count his ambassadorial job to be history.

This comes after Parliament passed a resolution to recall Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza from Burundi where he is the Ugandan Ambassador. However it is the Executive arm of government that has powers to implement the Parliamentary resolution, and it could as well choose to ignore it.

‘Iron’ fighter Kyaligonza recorded a statement on Friday after President Museveni insisted that he must face the law. In the statement, Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza was tasked to produce his driver who violated the traffic rules. However, by yesterday the driver had not appeared at Police for interrogation as by promised by Kyaligonza.

Maj. Gen. Kyaligonza in an earlier interview said that his driver only violated the traffic rules because he was escaping from a chaotic scene that was ahead.

He further said his body guards confronted the officer because she insulted him which angered the body guards.
