Makerere University suspends nine students, warns 26 over spearheading tuition increment strikes

In an attempt to restore calm at Makerere University, the management of the institution has decided to sideline several students who allegedly fronted the unrests and protests against the new university fees policy of 15% tuition cumulative increment.

“The management has taken disciplinary action against some students. The following have been suspended and others warned. Affected students are requested to collect their letters from the Office of the Dean of Students,” reads an official statement from the University.

The statement confirmed suspension of nine students who include;

  • Rodney Kiggundu (Bachelor of Science in Computer Science),
  • Omunyokol Lydia (Bachelor of Arts with Education),
  • Judith Nalukwago (Bachelor of Dental Surgery),
  • Musiimenta Anitah (Bachelor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology),
  • Mwesigwa Peninnah Balambi (Bachelor of Environmental and Geographical Sciences),
  • Nyangoma Pamerah (Bachelor of Arts with Education),
  • Elith Nabimanya (Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering),
  • Benjamin Ahikiriza (Bachelor of Laws),
  • Sserwadda Isaiah (Bachelor of Commerce),
  • Nyinamanyonyi Marvin (Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts),
  • Kayondo Vicent (Bachelor of Science – Biological),
  • Ouma Epaphrus (Bachelor of Arts, Social Sciences),
  • Tumusiime Joseph (Bachelor of Arts, Social Sciences),
  • Babirye Nicky Namisi (Bachelor of Library and Information Sciences),

Earlier today, Police fired tear gas and live bullets in the University library to disperse students’ assembly.
