The organizers of the controversial Miss Curvy pageant have today petitioned the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.  Ann Mungoma the Director of Miss Curvy who was accompanied by some of the contestants stormed the August House at midday leaving many staring and wondering what was happening.

Speaking to the Speaker, Mungoma petitioned her to correct the misconception that the Pageant was about sex. This was after the Speaker protested on Monday against the use of women’s bodies to promote tourism.

During her address, Kadaga told the organizers to go ahead with the pageant acknowledging that she misinterpreted the whole idea.

“I misunderstood the pageant after the protest it faced from the public but now that I have understood what it is about, it is okay. You can go ahead and organize the event,” said Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament.

The Speaker during the plenary sitting informed the House of the petition from the Miss Curvy organizers.

“Their position is that they have a right to organize their beauty pageant because it is not sex tourism.” Kadaga said

Kadaga also urged the Members of Parliament to allow the controversial pageant go on. According to her if the members insist on their position they will be discriminating against the curvy ladies. She further said for the small ones the members are okay with the contest yet they are not okay with the contest of the big ones as she urged the House to understand the position of the organizers.

Hon. Betty Nambooze said that even mothers need an opportunity to participate in a beauty pageant while the speaker insists that Miss Curvy Contest is an issue of human rights, You can’t say if you’re fat you can’t participate in a beauty contest.

According to Mungona, more than 200 ladies have registered for the contest. She further assured the ladies that the contest would go on as planned despite the misgivings and criticisms the event has faced from a cross section of Ugandans including Religious figures.

“Miss Curvy is a beauty pageant that is organized Internationally to recognize curvaceous women and not slim women, since many people have failed to get the real definition of the Miss Curvy contest,” she said.

The campaign is open for all curvaceous women, aged 18 to 35 of Ugandan decent that are willing to represent Uganda Internationally.
