In Uganda the Hipipo Awards might not be so much of a monster deal for musicians and their fans (only the PAM Awards were ever a gigantic deal for the local music fraternity). But cross two national borders to the South West of Uganda and enter Burundi, and a recent Hipipo Award win has become a cause of national celebration over there.

A video of the reception Natacha Burundi received on return to Burundi earleir this week, with a HIPIPO Award she won in Uganda over the weekend.

Natacha Burundi won the Africa Fans Fresh Talent category at the 8th edition of the HiPiPo Music Awards helf at Serena last weekend, and videos that have come in from Bujumbura indicate that the fast-rising songstress returned home to a heroic welcome that somewhat froze Bujumbura as she made her way from the airport.

The videos show fans lining up at the airport to welcome the award winner, and thereafter escorting her in a big convoy to the city centre, with scores lining the streets hoisting tree branches and other items in expression of adulation to the star. Natacha herself went about displaying her award from an open car, and somehwere in the city she climbed a podium to address the crowds about her award win, declaring that it was a win not just for her but for the whole of Burundi.

But perhaps Burundians might be right to celebrate the win, given Natacha’s win was somewhat a continental one, something not many Burundian musicians have achieved before. The musicians Natacha beat to the award included: Yovi (Nigeria), King Monada (South Africa), Joyce Blessing (Ghana), Mankind (Kenya) and Mbosso (Tanzania)

a female artist from Burundi received an heroic welcome back home as she returned to her motherland. Fans lined up at the airport to welcome the award winner.
