Uganda’s State Minister for foreign affairs Henry Okello Oryem has disclosed that government is open to any requests of asylum in Uganda from deposed Sudan president Omar Basir.

“If Omar al-Bashir applies for asylum in Uganda, that is a matter that can be considered by the President of Uganda,”Oryem told journalists while at parliament today.

Oryem said that President Museveni will consider giving the deposed general asylum because Bashir has been a key player in promoting peace in Africa especially in South Sudan.

“President Omar Bashir was co-guarantor for the peace agreement of South Sudan, he has played a very critical role which we are very grateful and his asylum in Uganda is something we can consider,” Oryem said.

Bashir’s 30 years’ rule was put to an end last week following two weeks’ countrywide protests that prompted the army to put him under house arrest before officially making an announcement. Sources reportedly said that Bashir was seeking asylum in Saudi Arabia because the masses angrily wanted to deal with him mercilessly. Besides being wanted by International Criminal Court, he is also accused by the nationals for failing to fight corruption and ruling Sudanese with an iron fist.
