Bobi Wine to court: It’s not me on trial but this court, because I’m here for disagreeing with the political leadership, particularly with President Museveni

Bobi Wine speaking in the dock earlier today.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to speak to you, in this honourable court. Your honour, I’m confident, because indeed it’s not me on trial in this court, it’s the court on trial. Because I have not committed any crime, as my brother has explained. I’m only here because I disagreed with the political leadership of this country, and in particular President Museveni. But my sirit is confident, your honour, because I’m here not because I have stolen public funds, or because I have killed somebody. I’m glad that I’m here because I’m fighting for them, for you Your Honour, for everybody in this country. I’m here for protesting against unfair taxation and against injustice. So if I’m to go through this oppression and pain, Your Honour, for the betterment of my country, so be it. History will acknowledge me. At least I know history will acknowledge me.  Thank you.”

Those are the words Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi spoke to the Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Esther Nahilya this afternoon, before he was remanded to Luzira Prison on remand till May 2 (Thursday).

We won’t add anything to them. Those are the words. Bobi Wine was appearing on charges of organising a protest against social media tax last year, which was in breach of the Public Order Management Act.
