Are MPs about to strike? Parliament confirms they have gone two months without pay

A mini-financial crisis has hit Parliament as it yesterday confirmed that legislators have not received salaries for the last two months.

According to Peter Ogwang, a parliamentary commissioner, the salary interruption has been caused by a delay in the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance. He apologized to the Members of Parliament whom he asked to be patient because the situation will soon get back to normal. He also assured the legislators that the commission is working on solving the issue.

Though most of the MPs have opted to be silent about the salary panic, some say the delay has affected their constitutional role of representing and monitoring their respective constituencies.

Parliament is said to be one of the government institutions that takes a lion’s share when it comes to salaries and allowances. With a total of 456 members in the August house, each receives at least Shs30 million per month.
