Rupareila Group of companies in partnership with NTV Uganda is set to raise money to build improved pit latrines in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb.

According to Rajiv Ruparelia, the proceeds from the upcoming 27th Royal Ascot Goat Races at Speke Resort Muyonyo will be used to build the pit latrines. The goat races have been a tradition annual event since 1993.

“Diseases like cholera, which is a result of hygiene, always, break out in slum areas like Kamwokya, yet government is slow to react and slum residents are too poor to afford proper treatment and end up dying. So it is better to prevent diseases than cure them,” Rajiv said.

Rajiv said that they will also train the youth on how to recycle plastic which can be used for making craft to earn some money.

“Plastics block sewage, causing flooding and next disease outbreak in the slums,” Rajiv said.

On the other hand NTV Uganda General Manager, Johnson Omolo pledged the company’s commitment to sponsor the event for the next three years and said they will expand the initiative and build more pit-latrines in the slums in the country.

“As Nation Media Group, we cherish people’s lives and it is about good hygiene and dangers of disease outbreaks.”
