As you might have already seen, read, and heard, Winnie Byanyima was appointed new Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Executive Director yesterday and she will assume office in Geneva, Switzerland very soon.

This appointment means that Winnie Byanyima will be the third UNAIDS Executive Director, replacing Michel Sidibe who quit in May, before Gunilla Carlsson took over the position on an interim basis.

UNAIDS is a UN division that advocates for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Winnie Byanyima has been the Executive Director of Oxfam International, a British Charity organisation, a position she has held since 2013.

Byanyima’s position comes with a lot of responsibilities, but also comes with even more dollars to compensate the director for her hard work and tight schedule.

According to the UN salary structure, the UNAIDS Executive Secretary falls under the “Professional Staff” category with a D – 1 and D – 2 salary scale. In case you are wondering what the D’s represent, a D – 1 salary earner at UN receives grossly a whopping $173,332 (over Shs640 million) in one year.

Other benefits include:

  • Health, life, dental and medical insurance
  • Annual leave
  • Dependency allowance
  • Pension scheme
  • Rental subsidy
  • Education grant
  • Home leave
  • Paid sick leave
  • Family leave
  • Family Visit
  • Maternity / Paternity adoption leave
  • Special leave

In addition to all that, if a UN staff member comes from a country that charges UN employees income tax, UN calculates that tax and reimburses it to their staff. This is truly what they call “Falling in things.”
