Makerere University among the top 5 Universities in Africa, with second-best medical school – new rankings show

The prestigious Times Higher Education magazine released the ranking of universities and institutions of higher ranking in the world called The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 last night and Makerere University came out to be the 5th best university in Africa.

The publication includes almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever to date.

The rankings are based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The university is the only one from Uganda included on the list, with the University of Nairobi in Kenya and University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania making the cut from the East African region.

Overall, the rankings show that Makerere University is ranked in the 771st position in the world but her Medical School is the second-best in Africa and 250th in the world. Oxford University in the UK tops the rankings.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is the only university ranking to be independently audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts.
