Makerere University Guild President, Julius Kateregga claims that government officials are failing to listen to the reality surrounding the Makerere unrests.

Kateregga says the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni is being fed on wrong information.

“Whatever she knows is different from what is happening,” Kateregga says revealing that the tuition increment itself explains how far they are from reality.

“We all know the country’s growth rate is measured at 5%, why then would you give us a 15% increment?” asks Kateregga.

The Guild President slammed claims that their demonstrations are politically motivated saying, “It is not true we are doing this for political reasons but only protecting the students.”

He adds, “Our leadership is more of talking than confrontation but management seems to take dialogue lightly, which has led us to this action.”

On the issue of nonstudents being involved in the strikes, Kateregga reveals that security at all entrances of the university do not allow any individual to access the campus premises without an ID yet almost 70% of the students don’t have IDs due to failure of management to issue them for the whole of last year.
