Athlete, Joshua Cheptegei yesterday quietly landed back in Uganda days after his Valencia heroics. The 10,000m World Champion was welcomed by family members and a few journalists.

Cheptegei said he preferred a low-key return this time round.

“I know some people might be bothered with my choice but this is how I wanted it,” Cheptegei said. He thanked God for all he has achieved this year.

The long distance runner narrated his ordeal before the race in Valencia. He said he almost turned it down after he got a malaria infection a few days to the event.

However, he braved on and went ahead to break a 10Km road world record finishing in a time of 26mins and 38seconds.

“I got an infection before the Valencia race but I braved on and won,” he said.

“2019 has been a good year for me,” said Cheptegei revealing that he hopes for the same next. He said his sights are already on next year’s Tokyo Olympics and the Diamond League.

“My eyes are now on Tokyo Olympics which is nine months away. Going to work even harder to for gold,” he said.
