EC tells political candidates to desist from making stopovers to people standing by the roadside

The independent Electoral Commission has advised candidates vying for parliamentary, city mayor, and councillors’ seats to adhere to the EC and Health Ministry guidelines on crowds during campaigns.

The Acting EC Spokesperson Paul Bukenya says the commission has endeavored to provide candidates with options of how they can safely conduct campaigns.

“Candidates don’t need to make a stopover to the people standing by the roadside. They don’t have to stand on the rooftop.

People should be told that we need to carry out the elections cautiously because of the COVID-19 environment. We don’t want to see running battles in the electoral process. Security is doing their best,” says Bukenya.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga also warned the public to refrain from gathering along roadside or highway to welcome different presidential candidates in their areas. He said security teams will not hesitate from dispersing crowds that do not follow the SOPs.
