Early this week, former Security Minister Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde declared his intentions to contest for the Presidency in the 2021 general elections. Ever since, Tumukunde’s declaration has been the talk of town, with the concerned wondering if he is going to join the opposition, form his own party or stay independent.

Although we are yet to fully ascertain Tumukunde’s stand, he has shed a light on the situation in the Opposition, saying that the Opposition should be put together as a critical mass.

“The thing I find in the opposition is sniffing. Everyone that comes in, they check at the face. Amongst them, there is a bit of infiltration. This is what I call payroll party,” Tumukunde said in an interview with Daily Monitor.

When asked to explain what ‘payroll party’ means, Tumukunde explained that some opposition figures are paid to keep in the opposition, which leads to them being labeled moles, and end up splitting and disorganizing opposition parties.

“I know how many parties it has split. I am an informed person. I don’t want to go personal with people but my main question is we must learn new tactics. There are also people who are comfortable in Opposition because it is paying,” Tumukunde said.

The General is not the first one to say this, because over the years, some opposition figures have been labeled moles of the ruling NRM party, and that they are only in the opposition to disorganise them.
