Private cars turn special hire taxis, drivers charge Shs50000 per passenger from Jinja to Kampala

With public transport means banned for 14 days in a bid to fight further spread of COVID-19 pandemic, owners of private vehicles in Jinja have turned them into special hire taxis to transport people.

According to an NBS TV reporter in Jinja, the owners have set up inflated charges for different destinations. They are charging Shs50000 per passenger from Jinja to Kampala. They also charge Shs5000 from Jinja to Bugembe, a distance less than 7 kilometres.

On normal days, a distance from Jinja to Kampala costs Shs5000 while from Jinja to Bugembe is between Shs1000 and Shs500.

On Thursday this week, President Yoweri suspended buses, taxis, boda bodas, tuku tukus, trains and any other kind of public transport means for 14 days.

Museveni however, allowed trucks carrying cargo, and boda bodas to only transport food and other essentials. He further allowed those with private cars to move with atmost two people.
