The global death toll caused by the coronavirus pandemic has continued to rise despite unprecedented lockdowns by different countries around the world.

Around the world, nearly 860,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus, and at least 178,000 have recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 42,000 people have died.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sounded an alarm saying that the pandemic is proving to be humanity’s worst crisis since World War II. He said the disease represents a threat to everybody in the world and it is going to bring an economic depression that probably has no parallel in the recent past.

“The combination of the two facts and the risk that it contributes to enhanced instability, enhanced unrest, and enhanced conflict are things that make us believe that this is the most challenging crisis we have faced since the Second World War,” Guterres said.
