The State House Anti-corruption unit under the leadership of Col Edith Nakalema has charged and remanded two security officers, a Police officer Francis Mpande and a Village Defence Unit officer Asimwe Junior to prison until April 27, 2020.

The two have been charged for aggravated torture when they mercilessly beat up a pregnant woman by the name of Mercy Nakate, accusing her of defying curfew directives of the President.

These are just a few of the 16 Police and LDU officers who were arrested yesterday for brutalising Ugandans in the guise of enforcing President Museveni’s directives on staying home and ceasing unnecessary movement, especially after 7 p.m.

“We continue to receive numerous complaints from around the country and a team has been assembled to address such concerns. We appeal to the public to continue reporting any cases regarding torture by security forces in this period,” said the Anti-corruption unit. Nakate is currently receiving treatment.

President Museveni also came out on Saturday to condemn the brutal acts of these security officers some of whom were even entering people’s houses and beating them up. The President referred to them as ‘pigs’, and vowed to show them the anger and anguish equivalent to that they used during the bush war.
