For the eighth time, President Museveni yesterday evening addressed the nation about the COVID-19 pandemic. He tackled a series of issues that are affecting Ugandans during this lockdown period and amongst them is the issue of rent. Museveni cautioned landlords who are evicting tenants in this time of war against COVID-19.

Museveni said the act of evicting people undermines government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic.

“Landlords who are trying to evict people because of rent should stop, they are trying to exacerbate a health crisis,” Museveni said.

He added, “The world is not ending today, there is still time to pay and this shut down is temporary, when it is lifted, you will demand your money.”

According to Museveni, the current situation is a matter of life and death where convenience should not be the center of debate.

“I want to remind you again that this issue is not convenience, business, or education. The issue now is a matter of life and death, we are not talking about normal life, and we are talking about life and death on a large scale,” he said.

Museveni once again made it clear that anybody violating the set emergency measures will be charged with murder if arrested.

The President also issued new two directives where he banned public exercising which had recently become a norm in Kampala areas. He urged the population to exercise from the compound or inside their rooms.

He banned movement of bodabodas beyond 2 pm as he said, “No Boda-boda should be seen carrying a passenger even if it is your baby. Boda-bodas should only carry cargo and this should stop at 2 pm. We don’t want to see boda-bodas on the road after 2 pm.”
