Cabinet resolves to lift lockdown next week, public transport, bars, schools to remain closed

Next week on Tuesday, the 14-day lockdown extension that was effected after President Kaguta Museveni’s address to the country on May 4 will come to an end, and a source has tipped us that Cabinet has resolved to have the lockdown lifted in phases and with strict guidelines.

This was decided in a Cabinet meeting that sat yesterday, Friday, May 15, 2020, at State House Entebbe chaired by President Museveni.

Currently, Uganda has confirmed 203 COVID-19 cases, but not a single one of them has been confirmed from the community in a period of 15 days, as truck drivers have been solely responsible for the increase of the cases in the country.

With this in mind, it was brought to the President’s notice that Uganda would be free from COVID-19 if it were not for the imported truck driver cases.

This is why Cabinet feels it is okay to further ease the lockdown, with public offices, and private transport set to be opened, with revised operation hours of up to 8 p.m.,  but to operate according to the Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) carrying not more than three people.

A source also told Matooke Republic that Cabinet feels it is still risky to reopen public transport, schools, bars and entertainment centres, and that curfew will remain, but with revised operational time.

Museveni is expected to address the country on the COVID-19 situation in the country as he has been doing regularly, next week before the current lockdown ends on Tuesday.
