Prof. Baryamureeba arrested for knocking woman dead

Former Makerere University vice-chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba was arrested yesterday for knocking a pedestrian dead and injuring another.

Baryamureeba, a former Presidential Aspirant was driving his Mercedes GLS 500 with a private Licence Plate “U” when he lost control of his vehicle at the at Kibuli-Muyenga junction, in Makindye Division in Kampala.

“The vehicle registration number “U” being driven by Prof. Baryamureeba Venansius knocked two female pedestrians and a perimeter wall, killing one person on spot. The deceased was identified as Mariam Jagenda and her body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem,” Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said.

Baryamureeba was driving his sleek Mercedes.

The second victim who has been identified as  Mariam Namusoke was admitted at Mulago hospital.

Baryamureeba was detained at Kabalagala Police Station on charges of reckless driving and causing death as investigations into the cause of the accident is underway.

“The vehicle is parked at Police yard pending IOV inspection,” he said.
