Following a social media uproar that saw the Local Defence Units (LDU) being sent back for refresher courses, the highly feared team is set to resume active operations.

Unlike before, the members of LDU will not be  participating in the daytime enforcement of the COVID 19 directives outlined by the Ministry of Health and the head of State.

In a press statement released by the office of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), in a move to curtail the increased crime rates at night, the LDUs that have undergone and completed training will resume operations.

“Owing to the withdrawal of Local Defence Forces from active operations to go back for refresher training, the level of criminality has since increased especially during the night. Severally local leaders and the general public have petitioned security leaders to re-engage them in order to contain the situation,” stated the Press release

The LDUs will also participate in Intelligence led limited operations on specific targets on request and support of the Uganda Police Force.

The LDUs were withdrawn from active operations following a public outcry coupled with a series of atrocities carried out by some of  the LDUs to innocent civilians.
