The few months ago have seen government distribute over 13 million free face masks according to the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Judith Nabakooba.  The free masks were a preventive directive of President Yoweri Museveni as the country started easing on lockdown measures.

Recently the distribution exercise commenced in Kampala and other Metropolitan areas of Wakiso and Mukono however, Nabakooba disclosed that some of the masks are of poor quality.

“The government is getting feedback that some of the masks being produced by some of the companies contracted are of poor quality and do not meet the standards issued by the Ministry of Health.

“This is a big disappointment on the side of the suppliers entrusted with the responsibility of producing quality face masks meant to save the lives of Ugandans,” Nabakooba said.

The minister revealed that the concerned authorities are going to follow up the issue and companies involved risk losing the contract.

To date, Uganda has 2,263 total cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 as 97 new cases were registered yesterday. The total recoveries stand at 1,226 while the number of death is 20.
