Minister Rukutana charged with attempted murder, remanded to prison

Ntungamo Grade One magistrate Nasifah Namayanja has remanded State minister for labour, Mwesigwa Rukutana to Kakika Prison in Mbarara on charges of attempted murder, malicious damage and theft of a gun.

According to Namayanja, Rukutana and other still at large on September,5, 2020 at Kagugu village in Ntungamo district unlawfully attempted to cause the death to Daniel Rweburingi contrary to section 204(a) of the Penal Code Act. Former Deputy Attorney General Rukutana denied all the charges and will have to appear before court again tomorrow Tuesday, September 8.

Rukutana was arrested on Saturday together with his four bodyguards following a violate exchange between the minister and supporters of his rival Naome Kabasharira who had defeated him in the NRM primaries.

A video of the incident was widely shared on social media before he was arrested and detained at Ntungamo Police Station where he spent a night. On Sunday, he was transferred to Mbarara Central Police Station where he has been until today when he was drove back to Ntungamo and arraigned before court.
