Disaster Preparedness ministry wants Shs66b to respond to weather-related disasters

Minister for Disaster Preparedness Hon Hilary Onek has disclosed that the torrential rains that have hit the country since April 2020 have caused a lot of havoc in most parts of the country.

Onek says losses suffered by individuals range from shelter, household items, crops, animals to businesses. In general, he reveals that the country lost public infrastructure like roads, bridges, schools, health facilities, water sources, sanitation facilities and power plants among others.

Onek declares that the ministry of Disaster Preparedness wants Shs66 billion to respond to weather-related disasters across the country.

“Entebbe particularly along the shores including Garuga and Mulungu in Busiro also experienced floods. Kampala District has equally suffered from floods especially communities along the shores of L. Victoria that include; Bukasa, Mutungo, Gaba, Munyonyo.

Other sub-regions greatly affected include; Rwenzori, Bunyoro, Lango, Teso and 122 Islands are currently under water. In Kasese and Bundibugyo, lives have been lost and several communities displaced due to floods,” he says.

The Ministry has so far spent Shs40 billion since April.
