Presidential aspirants to be tested for COVID-19 before nomination

The Electoral Commission (EC) has today on Thursday issued nomination rules for aspiring presidential candidates ahead of the nomination exercise slated for next week on November 2 and November 3 at Kyambogo University.

 Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC chairperson, told the media that aspirants will be allowed to move with nine more people to avoid crowding the nomination venue. Byabakama added all the groups that will be let in the nomination venue must have negative COVID-19 tests 72 hours before the nomination date.

“The particulars of the persons accompanying the aspirant shall be submitted to the Commission in advance and all the persons accompanying the aspiring candidate must have 72-hour polymerase chain reaction negative test for coronavirus, which will be taken at our cost,” Byabakama said.

By press time, 10 aspirants who include; incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of National Resistance Movement, Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of National Unity Platform, Eng. Patrick Amuriat of Forum for Democratic Change, Maj Gen (rdt) Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation and former security minister Lt Gen. (rtd) Henry Tumukunde (independent), Pastor Fred Mwesigye, Nancy Linda Kalembe, Joseph Kabuleta, John Katumba, and Willy Mayambala are all awaiting nomination as their signatures have already been verified. 12 more aspirants await their signatures to be verified.

Other requirements for one to be nominated include; Must be a citizen of Uganda, Must be a registered voter, He/she must have paid nomination fee of Shs20 million.
