Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) Chairperson Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi has been committed to the High court to stand trial on charges of corruption.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) said investigations into the matter were complete and that they are ready to present evidence against her and her co-accused.

Ntambi and nine other EOC staff members are facing 25 counts of causing financial loss, conspiracy to defraud, embezzlement, corruption, and abuse of office.

The staff include Mujuni Mpitsi, the Secretary to the Commission, Olwor Sunday Nicholas, the undersecretary, Moses Mugabe, a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, and Byangire Harriet, a Senior Accountant.

Others are Edith Kamahoro, a senior Personal Secretary; Kwesiga Ronnie, an Accounts Assistant; Jjemba Evans, the Principle Compliance Officer, Kwihangana Manasseh, a Senior Compliance Officer, and Sarah Nassanga an Office Attendant.

Ntambi is charged on separate counts of conspiracy to defraud the government of Shs35m in 2019, conspiracy to defraud government of Shs9m and negligence of duty leading to gross mismanagement of the commission’s funds.

She is also accused of directing the collection of Shs100 million which they had approved in the commission meeting and the said money was to be used as kickbacks for individuals who worked hard for passing of the commission budget in 2018/19.

Ntambi was remanded to Kigo Prison on October 29, after skipping Court on several occasions until criminal summons were issued. She was granted bail on November 4 and her travel documents were deposited with court to avoid leaving the country.

Ntambi also faces interdiction after the DPP directed the Gender Ministry Permanent Secretary to interdict her, to pave way for her trial without interference.
