Former Uganda Medical Association president Dr. Obuku Ekwaro has said that Uganda would have done better in the battle against COVID-19 if it was not having a ‘military’ government that’s very hungry to stay in power.

Obuku admits that even though most countries are losing the battle against COVID-19, for Uganda this is an election year, it has made it worse.

“We need to divert expenditure on military hardware to medical hardware. We need to invest in human capital,” says Dr. Obuku.

He discloses that nearly everybody will catch COVID-19 but putting on a mask is important.

“People should eat grass (greens). Military wear will not take away COVID-19. You do not take away COVID-19 by shooting at crowds,” he says.

“A lockdown may be more dangerous. We have to live with -COVID19. We need to know who is infected by testing. We need cheaper test kits. If you go to a market, wash hands with soap, politicians should donate soap and masks,” he adds.

On the issue of government advising citizens not to travel to villages for Christmas, Obuku reacts to it saying; “You can’t tell revellers not to go home for Christmas when you are having rallies. We must lead by example.”
