Mao wonders why EC summoned Lumumba instead of candidate Museveni over violation of COVID-19 campaign guidelines

This week has seen the Independent Electoral Commission (EC) summon two presidential candidates Kyagulanyi Robert Sentamu of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC) Patrick Oboi Amuriat over continued breach of campaign guidelines intended to stop the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

However, for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party the commission decided to summon Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba over the same matter.

Democratic Party President and 2021 presidential candidate, Norbert Mao has said that the decision by EC to summon presidential candidates for opposition parties and Lumumba for the ruling party openly portrays the double standards in the 2021 electoral process.

“In the case of NUP the Candidate is summoned. In the case of NRM the Secretary General is summoned. EC should treat all players equally. We say no to double standards! Every candidate appointed an official agent who should handle certain matters of urgency.

Ugandans are keenly monitoring every action of the EC,” says Mao.

He adds, “Mr Byabakama and the entire EC have been conspicuously silent while violence has been meted out to Hon. Kyagulanyi and NUP supporters by security forces. It’s in their best interest not to interfere with the will of Ugandans.”
