Police collects Shs330m in fines during crackdown on COVID-19 breaches in just two weeks

Despite claiming how they were waiting for an official strategy of how they will be collecting fines from those defying COVID-19 new guidelines, Police has so far reportedly collected Shs330.3 million in fines from motorists defying COVID-19 restrictions in just two weeks.

According to the Observer, Police is fining riders Shs40,000 to release their motorcycles while Shs100,000 is paid by drivers to release their motorvehicles.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga in a statement yesterday disclosed that in the past weeks, a total of 857 persons have been arrested countrywide for flouting the lockdown and curfew restrictions; 600 motorvehicles were impounded, out of which 493 motor vehicles were issued with EPS tickets, 107 are still pending clearance; 2,762 motorcycles were impounded out of which 2430 were issued with EPS tickets, 332 are still parked and pending clearance.

This means the released 493 cars paid express penalty of Shs100,000 each totalling to Shs49.3 million while 2430 riders paid Shs40,000 each amounting to Shs97.2 million.
