Sylvia Muwebwa Ntambi, the embattled Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has changed her name months after being charged with corruption and abuse of office.

In a published deed poll, the EOC boss renounced and abandoned the use of the name Sylvia Ntambi as it appears on her national identification card and in the lieu assumed the name Sylvia Nabatanzi Muwebwa.

“In the pursuance of my side change of name as fore said, I shall hereby declare that I shall of all time thereafter in all records, deeds, and instruments in writing and in all actions, proceedings and transactions, and upon all actions whatsoever go by, use and sign the said name in lieu of the name Ntambi Sylvia renounced as fore mentioned,” reads in part of the deed poll.

“I therefore request and authorise all persons at all times thereafter to designate and by my assumed name Nabatanzi Sylvia Muwebwa,” she said.

Muwebwa is still grappling with corruption charges which were leveled against her in 2020. She was remanded to Kigo prison after skipping Court on several occasions but was later released on bail.

Muwebwa and nine other EOC staff members are facing 25 counts of causing financial loss, conspiracy to defraud, embezzlement, corruption, and abuse of office.

The staff include Mujuni Mpitsi, the Secretary to the Commission, Olwor Sunday Nicholas, the undersecretary, Moses Mugabe, a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, and Byangire Harriet, a Senior Accountant.

Others are Edith Kamahoro, a senior Personal Secretary; Kwesiga Ronnie, an Accounts Assistant; Jjemba Evans, the Principle Compliance Officer, Kwihangana Manasseh, a Senior Compliance Officer, and Sarah Nassanga an Office Attendant.

Muwebwa is charged on separate counts of conspiracy to defraud the government of Shs35m in 2019, conspiracy to defraud government of Shs9m and negligence of duty leading to gross mismanagement of the commission’s funds.

She was committed to the High Court to stand trial after the Director of Public Prosecution said investigations into the matter were complete.
