It will be an unceremonious end of duty for Equal Opportunites Commission boss Sylvia Muwebwa Nabatanzi when she hands over office this Friday, February 5.

Muwebwa’s term of office ended on January 19, 2021 and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is the appointing authority has reportedly declined to renew her contract.

The tail end of Muwebwa’s contract was mired in controversy after being charged with corruption and abuse of office.

Last week, she swore an affidavit changing her name from Sylvia Ntambi Muwebwa to Sylvia Muwebwa Nabatanzi. It was perceived as an attempt to clean up her image after her name having drowned in corruption scandals.

Muwebwa is currently battling offences of Conspiracy to Defraud (2 counts) and Corruption, contrary to Section 309 of the Penal Code Act and Section 2 (t) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.

In the case sanctioned by the  Director of Public Prosecutions, Muwebwa and nine others are accused of conspiring to defraud government of Shs35m between 19th November 2018 to 30th April 2019.

She is charged with conspiring to defraud govenrment of Shs9.48m.

On several occasions, Muwebwa skipped court summons and on October 29 2020, she was remanded to Kigo prison when she finally made a court appearance. She was bailed on November 4, 2020.

Another contentious matter has been whether Muwebwa should be interdicted by the line ministry as she stands trial, but that does not need be resolved as her contract has not been renewed.
