Every year, International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 to celebrate women, the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

The Secretary for Mobilisation of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Ingrid Turinawe has said that she sees nothing to celebrate on Women’s Day particularly in Uganda.

Ingrid claims that there due share is just ceremonial as it doesnot benefit the women population.

“Where is the women’s movement that the women we admire like Winnie Byanyima used to drive? We used to celebrate Vice President Specioza Kazibwe until she disappeared.

Now we are celebrating a female Speaker of Parliament. There is so much we have to do as women, organize ourselves and go back to the core issues that affect us,” says Ingrid.

She adds, “We have women in positions of power but without power. We have 100 female MPs but what have they done to help this woman who voted them into power?”

Ingrid believes that women in leadership positions must use the positions to make sure the difficulty of aspirations of women is brought up.
