Utility company UMEME has promised to address the issue of ‘illegal’ deductions from customers while purchasing electricity units in March and April 2021. Through social media, Costumers complained of getting lesser units than the usual.

UMEME spokesperson Peter Kauju explains that UMEME reached out to customers about the recovery of electricity arrears for the benefits enjoyed by some customers in December 2020.

“All the affected customers will or some have already been notified by SMS,” he says.

However, he reveals that all customers who were double charged will be refunded in their next transactions.

“Customers are advised to reach out to us through our known customer service channels,” he says.

UMEME’s explanations come a day after the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) directed them to stop illegal deductions from its prepaid energy vending system known as yaka. ERA also promised to conduct investigations into the matter.
