In 2019, Bugweri county Member of Parliament Abdu Katuntu announced how he was not going to participate in the 2021 general elections claiming that 21 years in parliament were enough for him having represented his people since 2001.

Katuntu revealed how he was set to move on and focus on other private things.

“I am not offering myself as a candidate for the elections as a Member of Parliament for Bugweri County. I promised my people and the whole country. After 20 years, I think it is time to move on,” Katuntu said in part during an interview.

After taking oath as the Bugweri County MP in the 11th parliament today, journalists tasked Katuntu to explain why he went against his words and contested again.

“I had made a pronouncement that I would not stand again, but this time the people I represent sat me down and said you cannot leave at this time. They said please continue to represent us,” Katuntu responded.

In the January polls, Katuntu who stood on an independent ticket defeated popular city lawyer Julius Galisonga who was sponsored by Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a party Katuntu subscribed to since 2001.
