Incumbent Rebecca Kadaga has lost the majority vote in the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party hence leaving Jacob Oulanyah as CEC’s choice for the position of the Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

Yesterday the NRM top party organ CEC failed to resolve the deadlock of who to endorse for speakership hence pushing another meeting to today Sunday May 23 at State House.

Kadaga and Oulanyah have been speaker and deputy speaker for ten years respectively.

Unlike in 2016 where Oulanyah was convinced to let Kadaga stand as sole candidate for the position, this time he vowed not to back off claiming that CEC promised him that 2021 was his turn to head parliament.

However, after submitting her credentials to the party Electoral Commission on Wednesday, Kadaga said that CEC has no powers to decide who will be speaker in the next five years.

Voting for speaker and deputy speaker is slated for tomorrow Monday May 24 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.
